Representing some of the best artists and makers living or working within a ten-mile radius of the city, each year York Open Studios selects from applicants to provide an opportunity for the public to visit artists' studios and exhibitions.
Once more a wide variety of artists are taking part - crafters and designer-makers working across a range of disciplines - painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, jewellery, photography, stained glass, wood-carving, furniture, ceramics and multi media. Download and read our Selection Process documentation which explains a little more about the selection process to understand how it works.
This website provides full information regarding forthcoming Open Studios weekends, illustrated details of both current and previous participating artists, associated events and workshops run by open studios artists.
From its first weekend in 2001 when just nineteen artists took part, York Open Studios has grown steadily, reflecting the quality and vigour of contemporary visual arts in the city.
Open over two spring weekends, YOS was initiated with the aim of promoting, celebrating and encouraging participation in the visual arts. It offers the opportunity to talk to and experience the world of the selected artists and makers, discover their passions and inspiration, share their knowledge and support their engagement with the local community. With studios, workshops and exhibitions open all over the city, York Open Studios is a major event in York. Over fifteen years it has introduced over 200 artists to the visiting public. The support and encouragement of visitors old and new for both the well established and the emerging artist is crucial to the continuing development of York's cultural environment.
York Open Studios is a not for profit constitutional organisation run by a committee of volunteers for the benefit of York residents, artists and visitors. Please download our constitution documentation if you would like to know about the organisation structure and formation.
